AHS to dedicate the 14th Historical Marker in Portage County

The Atwater Historical Society is dedicating the newly erected Ohio Historical Marker on July 1, 2012 at 2:00 PM.  The dedication will take place at the Historical Marker in front of the Atwater Cemetery, located at 1219 St. Rt. 183, Atwater, Ohio 44201.

The Atwater Historical Society with the assistance of a grant through the Ohio Historical Society has purchased a historical marker for the Atwater Coal Company Mine Disaster that occurred on July 3 1872.  This event qualified for the  14th  Historical Marker  in Portage County because it was the first Mine fire with more than 5 fatalities (In Ohio)  and Ohio was the second state to pass mining laws.

The Historical House will be open for public viewing after the ceremony with light refreshments being served.  For more information please contact Ron Stanfield at 330-947-3589.
