On October 27, 2010, The Atwater Historical Society held it’s monthly meeting with guest speakers Gary Harrison and Joan Trautman of the Randolph/ Suffield/ Atwater Food Shelf; a non-profit service organization that provides food to those in need.

Gary and Joan explained how they utilize and assist members of the three communities with the gifts from the assistance of donations that come from local businesses and citizens of the area.  The Food Shelf assists about 25 families a week, and families are allowed to receive about one week’s worth of food every month, though most served do not return every month for the assistance.

Families in need can call United Way at 211 and they will assist with setting up a time and date for the assistance to families and assists with other information that may be found beneficial for the families in need; such as electric shut off notices.

During the meeting the Food Shelf Directors showed gratitude for those who donate their time by volunteering, food items and monetary gifts while explaining with the monetary donations can sometimes assist further because they have the purchase power to buy four times the amount of food for one dollar.

The Atwater/Randolph/Suffield Food Shelf is also involved in putting together food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas also provides help with the Christmas Giving Tree.  They also assist in the Hot Meal Program that is open to everyone regardless of income on Mondays.
