The Atwater Historical Society will hold it’s Wednesday, January 25th meeting at 7:30 PM at the Society’s Museum, located at 1219 State Route 183, next to the Town Hall.

Mr. Wayne Enders from the Portage County Historical Society will be giving a Drama presentation about James A. Garfield, 1881 U.S.President and former Portage county Congressman.

The program is free and open to the public

This will be a open ”bring a friend night”. So invite a friend to come with you. There will be questions and stories about Atwater and the local area. Bring your old photos and area artifacts. Free refreshments and snacks will be available.

Historical Marker to be dedicated 2012 in Atwater

The Atwater Historical Society with the assistance of a grant through the Ohio Historical Society has purchased a historical marker for the Atwater Coal Company Mine Disaster that occurred on July 3 1872. This event qualified for the 14th Historical Marker in Portage County because it was the first Mine fire with more than 5 fatalities (In Ohio) and Ohio was the second state to pass mining laws. Stop by the sign location, at the entrance into the Atwater cemetery that leads back to the graves of the 9 men and a 9 year old boy on State Route 183 to read it’s story. The Atwater Historical Society will hold it’s Wednesday, October 26th meeting at 7:30 PM at the Society’s Museum, located at 1219 State Route 183, next to the Town Hall.

The Society has purchased an Ohio Historical Marker through the Ohio Historical Society. It has been delivered and plans are in progress to have it installed at the Atwater Cemetery next to State Route 183. It commemorates the death of nine men and a nine year boy in a coal mine accident at the Atwater Coal Mine Company in 1872. This Mine Tragedy will be discussed at our meeting

The Atwater Historical Society will hold it’s Wednesday September 28th meeting at 7:30 PM at the Society’s Museum, located at 1219 State Route 183 next to the Town Hall.

We are having our Membership Drive. Any new member who purchases a $10 Membership will receive a free Atwater sweatshirt. (A $20 Value) after attending three meetings.”While Quantities are available”.

Happy Birthday Atwater Historical Society!

The non profit organization known as Atwater Historical Society is celebrating 15 years strong in the Atwater community! We are always looking for new members to get involved, learn the history and to keep it going for our young members in our community. Please feel free to join us at our next meeting Wednesday, July 27 to come in and learn about our community and see some wonderful k9 action with the Portage County Sheriff K-9 units! We would love to see you there!

ATWATER HISTORICAL TO HOST PORTAGE COUNTY K-9 DEMONSTRATION.

The Atwater Historical Society will hold it’s Wednesday July 27th meeting at 7:30 PM at the Society’s Museum,

located at 1219 State Route 183, next to the Town Hall.

Portage County Sheriff Deputy Ed Hayes with K9 Charlie and Deputy Eric Noel and K9 Cooper, will hold a demonstration for the Atwater Historical Society at its next meeting. It is free to the public for all adult’s and children. The demonstration will be about a hour long and will be held at the front yard of the Museum. Please bring a blanket or chair. In case of rain it will be held in the Town Hall.

Atwater Historical Welcomes Portage County Sheriff

Portage County Sheriff, David Doak was the guest speaker at the Atwater Historical Society’s April meeting. He spoke about his life in law enforcement, also about some of his most memorial investigations and cases. He also addressed his future goals for the Sheriff Department. After his presentation he answered questions from the large group attending the meeting.
