Historical Marker to be dedicated 2012 in Atwater
The Atwater Historical Society with the assistance of a grant through the Ohio Historical Society has purchased a historical marker for the Atwater Coal Company Mine Disaster that occurred on July 3 1872. This event qualified for the 14th Historical Marker in Portage County because it was the first Mine fire with more than 5 fatalities (In Ohio) and Ohio was the second state to pass mining laws. Stop by the sign location, at the entrance into the Atwater cemetery that leads back to the graves of the 9 men and a 9 year old boy on State Route 183 to read it’s story.
